Fiume o Morte!
A film on the theme of nationalism, militarism and leadership
The voices of contemporary Rijeka's inhabitants take us through one of the most interesting and least explored historical events of the 20th century: the sixteen months of the city's occupation by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio and his legionnaires. By composing in an original way extraordinary archival images from the period and reenactments featuring the city's current inhabitants, Rijeka director Igor Bezinović brings to life in the public space of modern Rijeka a period when the Croatian town experienced an unexpected transformation.
Fiume o morte! is a feature-length documentary that draws on elements of fiction to tell the story of how memory is unreliable, reality a social construction, and the present a key to understanding the future.
